Do you know what decision fatigue is and how it effects your home? Decision fatigue comes when making choices over a certain period of time. The more choices you make, the harder it gets for your brain, so often choices made towards the end of the day can tend to be ones that don’t align with your goals. Ex: It’s the end of a very long work day for you and the first thing that comes out of your kids’ mouths when you get home is the dreaded “what is for dinner” question. No one has an idea, there is nothing in the fridge and you decide to just order take out. And in most cases, this takeout is not aligning with your healthy eating goals. We’ve all been there and felt that “I just don’t have it in me” feeling—that, right there, is decision fatigue. The cure: planning. When you plan out your meals and have the ingredients on hand ahead of time, there is no thinking needed. Decision is made and done. Decision fatigue is very real--we make on average 35,000 decisions EVERY day. When we start a design project, the decisions that need to be made are countless—and this is on top of our 35,000 other daily decisions. The key to making good decisions is planning, especially when it comes to your home. You wouldn’t want your kitchen or family room to be one big version of “Let’s just get takeout”, right? Without proper planning, you end up making decisions on the fly, without much thought and possibly when your brain has just had enough. Believe me, this is not how you want to make your design decisions because they almost always cost more than takeout. When you plan out your project, you are able to make decisions that align with your goals. Choices that reflect your style and how you want to feel in your home, choices that address your daily needs (planning this can save you so much time) and choices that support your ideal life (designing your home with your ideal life in mind is the key to a dream home). I believe that planning is the key to good design—it’s the foundation that everything else is built on. That being said, what's for dinner tonight? Happy Spring! As the days get longer and warmer, our focus tends to go to our outdoor spaces. I’m all about a good patio or a fire pit, but don’t miss the opportunity to lighten up your interior spaces for the warmer weather. Swapping out some accessories is an easy way to give your space a summer vibe. My aunt & uncle had a house on a ski resort and I was always amazed as a child (yes, my obsession with interiors started at a very young age) how different it felt in the summer then it did in the winter. My aunt would put slipcovers on the big chenille sofas instanlty changing the whole vibe of the space.
It’s like changing up your menu—we eat different foods in the summer than winter—lighter, fresher. The same thing can happen with your home. Change it up—move accessories from one room to the next—add some flowering plants—rearrange your furniture.

Paint colors—it feels like there are a million choices, right? That’s exactly the beauty of paint colors—all of the options. People tend to get overwhelmed with the abundance of choices, but really it’s just a great opportunity to get the right color and shade. The mistake many make is starting with a paint color. Because there are so many options, it is where I finish a room. Yes, I have a general sense of where we are going as I pull a room together, but the paint is one of the last things I select. When all of the components of a room have been selected, then it is the time to evaluate paint colors to get the perfect fit. Start with a concept, select all the furnishings and then bring it all together with the paint. I’m putting together something exciting. Did you know that more than half of my design process is in the planning? Before any of the magic can happen—all of the fun, pretty stuff—we develop a solid plan. This plan covers a lot of information extracted with the 5 design W’s. Who is going to use the space? What is going to happen in the space? Where are the defined zones? When will the space be used? And most importantly, the why. The why in your life—goals, plans, visions—all need to go into your home design. The result is a home that will nourish your soul, support your dreams and bring you joy every day. That is what it’s all about.
